Is Canton Fair Worth It for Small Buyers?

It depends on what you buy and how much of it. The fair is strongest when you already know your category, want to compare suppliers face to face and can order in quantities a factory takes seriously. For a small, simple or first test order, Yiwu or online is often the better first move — and the fair still works as a research trip if you prepare for it.

What it is for

What the fair is genuinely good at.

Four things the fair does well

  • Seeing many suppliers in a short time — products, materials and communication style compared across exhibitors without waiting days for replies.
  • Face-to-face discussion — technical details, custom requirements and tooling are easier to settle in person than by message.
  • Category discovery — if you do not yet know which suppliers or product types exist, a large fair shows you the whole range in a day.
  • Relationships — a supplier you have met in person is usually easier to work with than one you only know from a listing. Buyers say this often; it is an observation, not a guarantee.

And four places it does not fit

  • A very small first order. Exhibitors generally expect larger volumes than market vendors, and MOQs for custom products tend to be higher. Some will negotiate a sample order — do not count on it.
  • Simple, low-value products. For small commodities, accessories and mixed small goods, Yiwu is usually easier to buy from in small quantities.
  • A tight budget with no plan. A trip without a target product, a target price and a list of suppliers costs money without producing anything usable.
  • No way to verify what you saw. A booth is not proof of a factory. You still need the company checks and, for anything that matters, the floor.

Both lists are about the same fact: the fair is a filter, not a decision. It is very good at showing you a lot quickly, and it cannot tell you who actually makes the product.

The alternatives

Canton Fair vs Alibaba vs 1688 vs Yiwu.

A general comparison, not a rule. Individual suppliers vary, and the only real test is a quote for your own product at your own quantity.

  • Canton FairBest for new categories, custom and OEM conversations, and comparing many exhibitors in person. Limitation for small buyers: higher MOQs, real travel cost, and you still have to verify the company.
  • AlibabaBest for export-ready suppliers and comparing remotely. Limitation: a listing makes it hard to judge who the real supplier is behind the storefront.
  • 1688Best for domestic pricing and components. Limitation: mostly in Chinese and aimed at domestic buyers, so it usually needs an agent.
  • Yiwu marketBest for small commodities, mixed small orders and same-day sample comparison. Limitation: many stalls are intermediaries, so quality is yours to check.

Two of those are places we work in rather than websites we link to: Yiwu for commodities and small goods, and Guangzhou and Dongguan for the private-label and OEM conversations the fair is full of.

Decide for yourself

Six situations, and how each one lands.

Read yours. If it lands on think twice, that is not a refusal of the fair — it is a suggestion to spend the money on a different first step.

  • Strong fitYou know your product, have a specification, and plan orders of a size a factory will take seriously.
  • Strong fitYou want new suppliers for an existing product line you already understand.
  • Strong fitYou need custom or OEM discussions with engineers, not just a price.
  • PossibleYou are researching a new category with no specification yet — treat it as a research trip, not a buying trip.
  • Think twiceYou plan a small first order of simple goods — Yiwu or online usually suits that better.
  • Weak fitYou cannot spend time on verification and follow-up afterwards. Most of the value of the fair arrives after it, not at it.

The money

What it costs, and whether it pays.

According to the Canton Fair organisers, applying for, replacing or renewing the overseas buyer badge is free of charge. The badge is not the cost — the trip is.

Your real costs are flights, accommodation, local transport, translation help, samples and the days away from work. Registration being free is exactly why people underestimate those.

A four-line test before you book

  • 01.List the trip costs — travel, hotel, days away from work, samples.
  • 02.Write down the order value you expect to place in the next 6 to 12 months.
  • 03.Estimate the price or quality improvement you need to justify the trip.
  • 04.If the trip costs a large share of your first order, test the product a cheaper way first.

Do not rely on anyone's claim that the fair is always cheaper or always more expensive — including ours. Compare your own quotes, at your own specification and trade terms.

How to make it pay

Before, during and after.

Before you go

  • Register early as an overseas buyer through the official channel.
  • Decide which phase matches your category, and only that phase.
  • Write a one-page brief: product, specification, target quantity, target price, market and certifications.
  • Pick 10 to 15 suppliers to meet. Not hundreds.
  • Prepare questions on MOQ, price at two other quantities, lead time, and who actually makes the product.

That list is the commercial preparation. The physical kind — where to sleep when the city doubles its rates, how to get an interpreter who is not on the supplier's payroll, what to carry — is in Canton Fair practical tips.

At the fair

  • Do not commit on the spot, however attractive the price looks.
  • Photograph the booth and the business card, and write down the legal company name.
  • Ask every supplier for the same quote format, or nothing is comparable.
  • Use a translation app if you need one — a misunderstanding about MOQ is expensive.

After the fair — where the value actually is

  1. Sort suppliers into continue, ask more and drop within 48 hours.
  2. Verify the companies you kept. The seven steps are in how to verify Canton Fair suppliers.
  3. Order samples before you place anything large.
  4. Visit the top two or three. That route is set out in from Canton Fair to factory visits, and if you are still inside the fair the switch-over days between phases can carry one or two of those visits.

If your order is small

Do not rule the fair out on quantity alone.

A minimum is a commercial decision the supplier made, not a law. Whether it can be moved is a negotiation with eight specific levers — and it is its own guide.

Two things you can settle before you travel: ask whether a stock version of the product exists, and price the same product through Yiwu or online so you know what the fair has to beat. Both are quick, and both change the conversation.

Everything beyond that — why the minimum exists, the eight trades that lower it, what to say at the booth, and when to test through another channel instead — is in Canton Fair MOQ for small buyers.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Is Canton Fair worth it for a first-time buyer?

It can be, if you arrive with a specific product, a target price and a list of suppliers to meet. Without that preparation the scale of the fair is overwhelming and the trip often produces nothing usable.

Is Canton Fair cheaper than Alibaba?

Not always. Some buyers report better prices or more room to negotiate at the fair; others find MOQs higher. The only reliable answer is to compare quotes for the same specification and the same trade terms.

Is registration for overseas buyers free?

According to the Canton Fair organisers, applying for, replacing or renewing the overseas buyer badge is free of charge. Confirm current requirements on the official website before you travel.

Can small buyers attend Canton Fair?

Yes, if they qualify as buyers under the official registration rules. Whether a supplier accepts a small order is that supplier’s decision, so ask about MOQ before you invest time in a conversation.

Is Yiwu better than Canton Fair for small orders?

For small commodities and mixed small orders, Yiwu is often easier, because many vendors sell in small quantities. Many Yiwu stalls are intermediaries though, so verify the source and the quality yourself.

Do I need to visit factories after Canton Fair?

For larger, custom or repeat orders, yes — it is the recommendation. A booth cannot show you the production process, the equipment or how quality is controlled.

What should I prepare before going?

A product specification, a target quantity and price, a short list of suppliers, a list of questions, and a plan for what you will do in the first 48 hours after the fair ends.

The Yiwu comparison has a fuller version on the Yiwu destination page, and the factory-visit question in the FAQ above is answered step by step in from Canton Fair to factory visits.

What we don't do

What this guide is and is not

This is general information, not business or legal advice. Badge rules, registration requirements and phase dates belong to the organisers — check the official Canton Fair website before you travel or commit money. Whether a supplier accepts your order size is that supplier's decision, not ours.

  • Confirm current badge requirements and phase dates on cantonfair.org.cn before booking anything.
  • One red flag is not proof of a problem. Ask for an explanation in writing and verify before you pay.
